Canvey LNG Appeals Planning Decision

The Canvey LNG partners have today lodged an appeal with the Department for Communities and Local Government to seek permission to redevelop the UK’s original LNG terminal on Canvey Island. The proposed terminal would be a state of the art installation that could supply up to 5% of the country's annual natural gas requirements and would return the existing LPG terminal back to its principal original purpose of LNG importation and distribution.

This decision was taken following extensive research into the critical national need requirement for diverse sources of future gas imports, with the UK expected to become 50% reliant on imports by 2010. The appeal also recognises Canvey’s history of safely delivering over 900 cargoes of LNG in the period 1964-1990.

The Canvey LNG partners have previously undertaken extensive local communication activities and are committed to continue this process in line with the procedure laid down by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
