The Project
Back in December, the Canvey LNG team proposed to build 240,000m3 of Liquefied Natural Gas storage capacity at the existing Calor owned terminal in Thames Road, Canvey. A full scale planning application and project plan is now being developed.
The site is currently being used to import and store LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). It was converted to do so in the mid 1990s by Calor, and has functioned as such ever since. If plans go ahead, it will soon become an LNG importation and storage plant.
The project is one of a small number of proposed or planned regasification projects within the UK.
The proposal includes the building of 2 full-containment tanks, each consisting of an inner tank made of nickel steel and an outer tank made of pre-stressed concrete. The facility will also include two new loading arms on the existing jetty, a regasification plant and additional underground pipeline for gas importation into the National Transmission System.
This will enable the distribution of 5.4 billion cubic metres of gas to UK customers representing 5% of the UK’s annual demand.
The proposal also includes the continued storage of around 10,000 tonnes
of LPG to provide supply security for Calor’s existing LPG customers
within the southern part of Great Britain.
Project Values
Employees and Contractors
All employees of partner companies and retained contractors will receive extensive training to enable them to complete their specific tasks safely and efficiently. All permits and, where appropriate, visas will be checked and ratified before they will be authorised to work on site.
Site Security
During the period of construction, the site will have comprehensive
24 hour security provided by guards and monitoring equipment. Visitors
will need to be pre-authorised and may be the subject of additional
checks before they will be allowed on site. Materials delivered to
site will be fully checked before receipted.
Environmental Policy
The project will have a full environmental policy document that reflects the issues highlighted in the completed environmental scoping report. Particular focus will be on managing responsibly road traffic surrounding the construction area, limiting emissions from machinery and ensuring the ultimate environmental impact on the area following completed construction work is minimised.
The Local Community
Calor has a strong heritage of supporting and openly communicating
with the local community, and recently helped fund a new computer suite
for a local school. Supporting the local community is a policy that
will be maintained and developed by the Canvey LNG team.
